The Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety works in low- and middle-income countries and large cities that have a high burden of road-related fatalities to implement proven safety measures and advocate for stronger policies. Bloomberg Philanthropies is addressing this urgent public health epidemic and saving lives by supporting high-impact, state-based interventions that can be replicated around the country.

By addressing the leading causes of cardiovascular disease, the Resolve to Save Lives initiative aims to help prevent million deaths over the next 30 years. Polio once cast a terrifying specter over most of the world. Now, wild polio seen in just two countries — Pakistan and Afghanistan — and is on the verge of being eradicated completely. Since Bloomberg Philanthropies has supported the Global Polio Eradication Initiative to finally rid the world of polio once and for all.

Road traffic crashes are the eighth leading cause of death around the world, killing nearly 1. Cities and countries, particularly low- and middle-income countries where the vast majority of traffic crashes and deaths occur, often lack the expertise and support they need to tackle key road safety threats: weak and inadequate road safety laws; limited police enforcement of existing laws; minimal or nonexistent vehicle safety standards; and streets designed solely for vehicle use that fail to consider other road users like pedestrians.

To fill this void, The Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety focuses on improving road safety laws in 15 countries and on and implementing evidence-based interventions in 20 cities.
