When you have an domain with a domain controller w2k3 you can install OCS into the domain. In my case, I just had an DC with 2k8.
During installation of OCS I encountered a problem with the service account. I couldn't create one and couldn't choose an excisting account. Hello, I'm trying to install OCS on my network. The name of the media format runtime package depends on the operating system and the Office Communications Server R2 setup that refers to the Windows Server or to the Windows Server Media format runtime installation package.
Note : I ran into an issue on my first attempt to install the desktop experience feature with the following error:. Attempt to install Desktop Experience failed. The specified package is not applicable error value: 0xFE. Attempt to install Ink Support failed. What annoyed me was that the install and uninstall process took upwards to 15 minutes to complete and I was only able to get it to install properly on the 4th try when I uninstalled both the Desktop Experience and Ink and Handwriting Services I only uninstalled the former on the first 3 tries.
Installing Desktop Experience will work, but it is not required. Windows Media Format Runtime is the real requirement.
The forest prep command will need to be reissued after the upgrade in order to re-establish the lost functionality. Obviously the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in on the domain controllers will not contain the Communications Server tab or the tasks to enable user for OCS, so administration should be performed from the OCS server itself or another supported host.
