Then following the prompts, I restarted the system. Well, with one small distinction: the Network Security Map was not identifying any of the other machines on the network. I could have probably fixed this by shutting all computers down and resetting both modem and browser, but why bother? Instead, I disabled permanently the tamper protection, then used System Restore to go back about 5 hours to when the machine had been fine.
The restore worked for once! Oh, and I reactivated the tamper protection, of course. It does seem that certain changes to the Network can have dreadful consequences on Norton, even though everything else is working fine.
As others have noted, probably uninstalling and reinstalling Norton could fix the problem. But now it seems that allowing the system to reset itself as I described might be a faster way to get there. It also seems to me that Symantec should not have so vulnerable a product. It should have a way of detecting the same things that I worked out logically, of self-checking itself in terms of the relative settings and active connections.
If the computer was able to connect to the internet without a problem and to other computers in the network, then certainly Norton should not itself be in the dark or so irremediably wounded.
