Why is this news to you? How old are you? Second hand retailers operate like convenience stores. You can instantly sell your stuff but you take a huge hit in price. A private sale like ebay doesn't have as much overheads and profit between the buyer and seller, so the sale price is often more favourable but the sale is slower. Its just how it works, if the business model allowed them to make money by giving better prices then someone would open a shop and do just that and steal all the business!
